¹I was originally not getting nine possible arrangements using this way of counting, but one important thing that I realized was the separation of the first and second sequences. That is to say, the analysis in Feller’s II.5.b is applied to each POSSIBLE SEQUENCE of runs. So with regards to this problem, all empty parking spaces followed by all filled parking spaces is a different run-sequence then all filled parking spaces followed by all empty spaces.
